Antique Persian Senneh Carpet

A very fine late 19th-century Persian Senneh carpet, distinguished by its exceptionally intricate drawing, finely woven construction, and striking geometric composition. The design is centered by a large layered diamond medallion, with an ivory outer medallion surrounding a warm madder-red center. The medallion is densely filled with miniature floral and geometric motifs, displaying the remarkable precision for which the finest Senneh weaving is known. The deep midnight-blue field surrounding the medallion is covered with an extremely fine repeating Herati-style pattern, creating a rich and almost textile-like background. The contrast between the dark field, soft ivory, madder red, muted blue-green, and delicate secondary colors gives the carpet both strength and refinement. An elaborate series of borders frames the field, with the principal madder-red border displaying large stylized palmettes and flowering vines alternating against finely drawn guard borders. The close-up photograph especially shows the remarkable fineness of the weave and the tightly articulated drawing. The carpet appears to retain exceptionally strong condition for its approximately 145-year age, with a remarkably complete appearance and beautiful mellowing of the natural colors. Fine nineteenth-century Senneh carpets are particularly admired for their thin, precise construction, sophisticated color combinations, and extremely detailed designs.
