Notes:
This exceptional Early 20th Century Chinese Art Deco rug is a striking example of the sophisticated monochromatic aesthetic that emerged in China during the 1920s and 1930s. The composition is rendered almost entirely in luxurious tonal shades of plum, aubergine, raspberry, and deep wine-purple, creating an atmosphere of remarkable elegance, depth, and refinement.
Unlike more traditional Oriental carpets with strong color contrasts, this piece relies on subtle tonal variation and sculptural texture to achieve its visual impact. The large central medallion and scrolling floral corner spandrels softly emerge from the field in a restrained relief-like manner, giving the design an almost embossed appearance. This understated approach is one of the most desirable characteristics of fine Chinese Art Deco rugs, where texture, movement, and color harmony become the primary artistic elements.
The rich purple palette is especially uncommon and highly decorative, shifting beautifully depending on the direction of light and the angle of the pile. In certain areas the rug appears deep aubergine and plum, while in others softer raspberry and burgundy undertones emerge, creating a velvety and luminous surface. The wool appears exceptionally soft and lustrous, further enhancing the luxurious character of the piece.
The rug remains in excellent to near-perfect condition, with a clean and even pile throughout. Its refined monochromatic palette and elegant open-field design allow it to function equally well in both classic and contemporary interiors, making it particularly appealing to collectors, designers, and decorators seeking authentic Chinese Art Deco carpets of exceptional decorative quality.
