This striking late 19th-century Caucasian rug represents a bold example of Kazak village weaving, executed in a classic prayer (mihrab) format. The composition is defined by a strong architectural niche set within a luminous ivory field, a highly desirable feature among both collectors and designers.
The interior of the niche is animated by a series of large-scale geometric and symbolic motifs, including cross-like medallions, stylized rosettes, and primitive anthropomorphic elements. These forms, rendered with confident drawing and generous spacing, reflect the powerful visual language characteristic of Kazak tribal weaving.
The color palette is particularly effective, combining:
A clean ivory ground, providing contrast and openness
Saturated brick red and coral tones
Bright sky and medium blues
Deep navy outlines, anchoring the design
Subtle accents of yellow and soft green
The border system is equally bold, with repeating geometric forms and reciprocal motifs that frame the composition with clarity and strength.
The presence of a woven date, 1313 AH, enhances both the historical significance and collectibility of the piece.
Condition: Very good antique condition, with even wear, good pile retention, and well-preserved colors.
