Antique Caucasian Kuba-Shirvan Rug

An exceptional late 19th-century Caucasian Kuba-Shirvan rug, measuring 4'5" x 6'10", distinguished by its unusually fine weave, sophisticated drawing, and remarkable state of preservation. The ivory field is completely covered with an intricate all-over geometric floral lattice, composed of repeating angular blossoms, stylized leaves, rosettes, and small polygonal floral devices. The dark indigo outlines create extraordinary definition against the warm ivory ground, giving the design an almost architectural precision while retaining the lively character associated with early Caucasian village weaving. Particularly impressive is the elaborate system of multiple borders surrounding the field. The broad madder-red border carries powerful archaic geometric devices in ivory, indigo, saffron, green, and soft blue, while narrower guard borders introduce small-scale floral and geometric ornament. The combination produces a richly layered frame without overwhelming the exceptionally detailed central field. The palette is especially attractive, incorporating natural ivory, deep indigo and blue-green, madder red, rust, saffron yellow, soft green, and touches of coral and pale blue. The colors have developed the mellow, harmonious character expected from a rug of this age.
