Antique Caucasian Soumak (Sumak) Kilim
Size: 3'5" x 6'1"
Origin: Caucasus (likely Shirvan / Kuba region influence)
Date: Circa late 19th.
Structure: Flatweave Soumak technique, wool on wool.
This is an exceptionally fine and visually striking antique Caucasian Soumak kilim, distinguished by its richly saturated color palette and highly articulated tribal drawing.
The field is dominated by a deep madder red ground, a hallmark of desirable Caucasian weavings, providing a warm and powerful visual foundation. Running vertically through the center is a sequence of elongated diamond medallions, each framed in strong indigo blue and ivory outlines. These medallions are connected by angular latch-hook elements and stylized linking devices, creating a rhythmic, almost architectural structure.
Surrounding the central axis is an abundance of secondary motifs—including rosettes, hooked polygons, small geometric florals, and possible stylized animal or totemic elements—executed with remarkable clarity and precision. The use of soft abrash and nuanced color shifts enhances the authenticity and depth of the piece.
The border is particularly refined, featuring a crisp ivory ground with angular vine and geometric guard motifs, sharply contrasting the rich field and framing the composition beautifully.
Technically, this piece is woven in the Soumak technique, which is stronger and more textured than standard kilim weaving, with a smooth face and slightly raised pattern definition . The back confirms a high-quality village weave, with tight, consistent wrapping indicative of skilled craftsmanship..
Condition:
Described as perfect condition,
No visible structural damage
Strong, intact selvages and ends
