Notes:
This elegant late-19th-century Persian Sarouk Feraghan carpet is a superb example of one of the most respected weaving traditions of Central Persia. Woven around 1880, it displays the refined artistry that distinguishes early Feraghan carpets from later commercial Sarouks. These carpets are admired for their fine weave, durable hand-spun wool, harmonious vegetable dyes, and graceful blend of village character with sophisticated workshop design.
The carpet is centered by an impressive elongated navy-blue medallion with an ivory centerpiece, resting on a rich terracotta-red field. The field is filled with delicately drawn flowering vines, palmettes, rosettes, and finely detailed botanical motifs that create an elegant, balanced composition without appearing crowded. The ivory corner spandrels provide beautiful contrast and add brightness to the overall design.
A deep midnight-blue main border frames the carpet with a classic arrangement of large floral palmettes, rosettes, and scrolling vinery, enclosed by multiple finely detailed guard borders. The border proportions are particularly successful, enhancing the grandeur of the field while maintaining exceptional harmony.
The color palette is one of the carpet's greatest strengths. Rich terracotta red, deep indigo blue, soft ivory, pale sky blue, muted celadon green, and warm camel tones have matured beautifully over nearly a century and a half. The use of natural vegetable dyes has produced the soft, luminous character that collectors prize in authentic 19th-century Feraghan carpets. Early Sarouk Feraghan rugs are especially valued for these mellow colors, fine wool, and artistic drawing.
The weave is fine and compact, producing crisp detail throughout the design while maintaining the durability for which Feraghan carpets are renowned. Remaining in good condition with attractive age-related wear, this carpet retains excellent decorative appeal and would be equally impressive in a traditional or contemporary interior.
