This handsome Antique Kurdish Runner is an outstanding example of early 20th-century Kurdish weaving, displaying the bold geometry, saturated natural colors, and authentic tribal character for which the finest Kurdish village rugs are admired. Bearing the woven date 1335 A.H. (1916–1917 AD), it represents an exceptional tribal weaving.
The warm light camel-colored field, mellowed naturally over more than a century, is anchored by a striking procession of eight linked diamond medallions in shades of indigo, rose, coral, saffron, and deep blue. Each medallion contains stylized tribal motifs symbolizing protection, prosperity, and continuity, while the spacious camel ground provides a beautiful contrast that enhances the bold geometric composition. Small scattered tribal devices further enrich the field without overwhelming its clean, balanced design.
Multiple decorative borders frame the composition, including a lively sawtooth guard border, a rich indigo floral border, and finely drawn reciprocal geometric guards that lend strength and architectural definition. The harmonious palette of light camel, indigo, coral red, rose, saffron yellow, walnut brown, and soft sky blue has developed a rich, mellow patina through decades of natural aging, reflecting the use of high-quality vegetable dyes.
Handwoven from hand-spun wool on a wool foundation, this runner possesses the dense, durable weave and resilient handle characteristic of quality Kurdish craftsmanship. It retains a full, luxurious pile with exceptional color preservation. Although the rug has been professionally reduced in length, the alteration has been skillfully executed and does not detract from its decorative appeal or structural integrity. It remains a highly attractive and practical antique runner.
Its strong tribal design, beautifully aged light camel field, excellent wool quality, and documented early date make this an exceptional decorative and collectible Kurdish runner, equally suited for a fine hallway, gallery, or discerning collection of antique tribal rugs.
