Antique Persian Tabriz Hajji Jalili Carpet

A very fine late 19th-century Persian Tabriz carpet attributed to the celebrated Hajji Jalili tradition, distinguished by its exceptionally delicate drawing, sophisticated floral composition, and beautifully subdued palette. The open ivory field is particularly attractive and is filled with an elaborate network of flowering vines, palmettes, rosettes, leaves, and graceful arabesques. Rather than relying on a dominant central medallion, the design develops rhythmically across the entire field, giving the carpet an unusually spacious and elegant appearance. Small stylized birds and other delicate decorative elements are incorporated among the flowers, adding considerable charm and visual interest. The coloration is one of the strongest features of this carpet. Soft ivory and beige are complemented by muted camel, pale gold, soft green, light blue, touches of rust and terracotta, and very dark navy outlines. This restrained, mellow palette is highly characteristic of desirable late-19th-century Hajji Jalili Tabriz weaving; comparable examples are specifically noted for colors that mellow beautifully with age. The field is surrounded by an unusually elaborate multiple-border system, with a broad floral main border enclosed by numerous finely drawn guard borders. The close-up photograph shows the remarkable fineness of the weave and the precision of the floral drawing. The back also supports the impression that this is a genuinely fine-quality piece rather than an ordinary commercial Tabriz. The carpet is in good condition considering its circa-1880 age, retaining a very attractive overall appearance. Any age-related wear contributes to the soft, antique character without taking away from the beauty and sophistication of the design.
